Mads brings in his girlfriend as co-driver for Rally Sardinia Print E-mail
Monday, 18 May 2009 12:08

Mads Østberg and Ole Kristian Unnerud has finished their cooperation after three good years. Mads wants to take the hard work even one step further. For private reasons, two children who are already seeing too little of their father, as the main, Ole Kristian has decided not to take that step with Mads.

Mads and AWRT are working in different directions to get a new co-driver on board. “We are not going to rush into anything”, Mads says,” we are looking for a permanent long term solution. We are evaluating, and have good alternatives in process, but we take the time we need, and we are not finished by now”.

Mads girlfriend, Veronica Engan, will therefore do her debut in WRC in Rally Sardina, as a temporary solution. “We are happy to be in this family situation” team director Morten Østberg says with a smile. “At the age of 24 Veronica is one of Norway’s best co-drivers, with many years national experience at top level, and 4 PWRC rallies in addition to that. She has the qualities to be a permanent solution, but due to their relation we all regard that as a not so good idea. But it is very inspiring for all of us to have her in this role for Sardinia. She allows us to do a careful search for a permanent solution, and secure the possibilities to perform well in this rally, that Mads really likes” he continues.

“I think it is a great opportunity for me,” Veronica says. “It has been my ambition to do co-driving on this level, I am confident that I can do it, and it is very special to debut in WRC with my boyfriend as driver.”

Last week Veronica and Mads had a successful practice together in Mads Subaru WRC S12b from 08. They continued with a successful pre event test at Sardinia on the 17th. in the Subaru WRC S14. Coming 6th. overall in Rally Portugal was a good result for Mads. AWRT has done promising developments with the car since then. “I feel we are very close now to take out the very good potential this car obviously has”, Mads comments. “I am really comfortable with everything towards Rally Sardinia, and we are both looking very much forward to start driving”.
