With fourth position on the last stage today, M-Sport Stobart Ford World Rally Team's Mads Østberg moved up to fifth place overall in the end of day two of Rally of Argentina.
Today's stages continued with new challenges for Mads Østberg. The 23-year-old has controlled his sixth place since Friday morning, until he moved up one place in the the absence of front driver Jari-Matti Latvala by his broken suspension.
- We are comfortable with being between the boys in front and have some seconds down to Villagra. We are noticing that he pushes harder here on his home rally than usual, said Mads Østberg.
Østberg have used day two to learn as much as possible and have found a better flow than yesterday. He ties up the day as a good day for him and co-driver Jonas Andersson. - The setup of the car has been much better than yesterday, and we have had a better flow today. The pace is not much faster, but we have controlled our speed in relation to those we are close to and we have been trying to pick some seconds up on them.
Rally Argentina is a rough rally and Mads experienced several times that the front guys had a tough line on the fastest roads. - It's so many jumps, so many special places her, and they know exactly where to cut over the big rocks and how big stones they can pas over, but I just go around them some places because I don´t have that cuts in my pace notes. In the high speed section you loose so much to not take those big cuts and the risk they are taking. But we have had lots of good experience from the stages, and learning the cuts, so I'm happy with today's effort, says Mads.
The tactic continued today to not push to the maximum, which Østberg thought was a bit difficult sometimes. - It’s my first time here but you always want to be quick. The pace notes is not that perfect when you come to a new rally, - so you get some surprises sometimes. We're marking that now. It's better to have the speed we have now, so we get safely through and can learn and get the experience we need for next year. It's the special details that makes it possible to push through a whole rally.
The first stage on Sunday morning is the 48 km Ascochinga stage. That is the longest stage so far this year of the World Rally Championship. 43 km is the longest stage Mads have ever been driven before, so this will be a new personal record for him. - I look forward to that stage, and I liked it very much when we were on the recce. It is a technically and a very demanding stage with around 40 minutes with full speed and is the longest stage I've ever had drive, - only if we're going through, Østberg laugh.
The aim of Sunday's stages for Østberg / Andersson is to keep the position and find a nice flow. - We shall try not to make any mistakes, stay focused on our tasks and enjoy the final stages, says Mads Østberg
